In addition to being a Registered Charity and therefore beholden to Charity Commission regulations, the IED became a Chartered Body in 2012.
This means that our governing document is a Charter from the Privy Council, endowed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, which enables us to carry out our activities and objects and governs what we can and cannot do as a body.
The Charter is what enables us to award Chartered Technological Product Designer to our suitably qualified and experienced product design members.

The IED is run by a small team of permanent staff, but the majority of our activities are carried out by volunteers.
Active members give their time to help with a range of activities, including: assessment of applications, accreditation of courses, compiling the content of the journal and guiding the development and future role of the Institution.
We are currently looking for enthusiastic members of all ages and levels of experience who are able to contribute some time (possibly only a couple of hours a month) to support the IED by joining a committee, working group, panel or Council.

As a registered charity we rely on income from our members to fund our activities - over 80% of our annual income comes from membership subscriptions.
The Benevolent Fund - this is a fund which is used to help members in times of financial hardship.
The majority of payments from the Fund go to help members who are out of work, between contracts, or long term sick with the cost of their membership subscriptions.
However, some funds are used in special cases such as assisting with costs of adapting access to the home of a member who suffered a stroke and now uses a wheelchair.
