Astute Fire was formed by a small group of individuals who had a desire to develop a company which focussed on fire engineering and, in particular, its creativity and potential for change. As a purely fire engineering company we have a desire to break down complex problems and develop appropriate solutions based on an understanding of the relationships between risk, design and cost.
The company was formed on this basis. A perfect fire strategy achieves an optimum balance between the risks of fire occurring and the costs of protecting against them. However, this requires a rigorous assessment of the chosen fire safety systems, and at the current time there is no legislative requirement to do this in any building. We have grown organically and now have around 30 staff working out of London and Glasgow, dealing with a large variety of fire safety related problems.
Every member of the team brings a unique set of skills and experiences. Core to our success is our flat management structure and culture that welcomes contributions from everyone.

This animation shows the various ways we approach projects.
We typically deviate from guidance (Route 1) and demonstrate how comparable levels of fire safety (Route 2) can be achieved using alternative fire safety measures.
With the comparative approach it is relatively easy to demonstrate compliance but this approach provides no explicit measure of fire safety.
Whilst we would prefer to design using an absolute approach (Route 3) using probabilistic methods and cost benefit analysis, this requires explicitly stated acceptance criteria which is not always available.

The first three animations in this section show how a comparative approach can be used to demonstrate equivalent levels of fire safety to that implied by guidance.
The 'Beyond Guidance' animation illustrates our preferred approach.
It is an absolute approach - an approach we are keen to develop and take forward for all building types and sizes.

Royal Arsenal Riverside is one of South East London's most exciting riverside addresses, occupying a prime location along the River Thames with a forthcoming on-site Crossrail Station and buzzing retail hub.
Astute Fire are currently engaged in the development of the fire strategies and construction site fire safety reviews (HSG 168 requirements) for the B-Blocks, A Blocks and B10.
This high-rise single stair office building in central London comprises 6,500m of office accommodation, located on a land locked site that allows for only one single stair access from Clerkenwell Green.
