When WW1 broke out, most of the Bacon's trawler fleet were appropriated by the Admiralty to be converted into mine sweepers or for anti-submarine duties. At the outset of WW2 Edwin Bacon paid for two Spitfires for the RAF as well as providing the Government with an interest-free loan. Edwin was offered a knighthood by Sir Winston Churchill for his generous support which he declined.
One of Bacon's trawlers, the Loveden, was involved in the last act of piracy in UK waters, as 5 members of the crew forcibly took charge of the vessel, described in The Times as "an act of drunken high spirits".
