Services
R&D Water Engineers uses a soil displacing hammer or 'mole' for a vast percentage of the work we do.
Where a renewal of part or all of a water supply pipe is the best option to fix the underground leak we will usually relay the pipe by moling.
Using compressed air, a specially designed metal pole or 'mole' is driven through the ground under the surface creating a tunnel through which we can then pass the new MDPE pipe (see video clip below).
Our engineers carry all the equipment required on the van, including the generator which produces the compressed air.

Water can be a notorious carrier of bacteria and South West Water are rigorous in their safeguarding of the mains water supply.
Certain types of private water pipe have to be disinfected (chlorinated) before South West Water will allow connection to their main.
R&D Water Engineers has many years' experience in detecting water leaks, burst pipes and underground leaks which are not visible.
We are skilled in the business of repairing, renewing and relaying water supplies both by moling or by cutting a trench in which to lay the pipe.

If your property was built before 1970 then there is a chance that you have lead water supply pipes.
Nowadays lead is no longer used for this purpose because it is believed that lead in the water is detrimental to health, particularly for young children and unborn babies.
If you are uncertain whether you have lead pipes then check the pipe where it enters your property, usually at the internal stop valve under the kitchen sink or in a downstairs bathroom or toilet.
Lead pipes are dark grey, soft and they mark easily as lead is a soft metal.

As a South West Water customer, you are responsible for any water leak, underground leak or burst pipe on your water supply from the boundary of your property to the property itself (see diagram below).
If you are on a shared supply, all homeowners are responsible jointly from the boundary of the properties for any common supply pipe and individually for a branch pipe bringing the water in to your home.
There is information on their website (R&D Water Engineers is a South West Water approved company).

Before you lay a new drive in any material - tarmac, brick pavers, resin, pressed concrete etc. - have a think about what lies beneath.
We get a lot of calls from customers who have a water leak on their supply pipe and the pipe runs under their driveway, newly laid.
Not surprisingly, customers are not very pleased when we say we will have to excavate and leave a patch in the new drive.
We're neat and tidy.
It can be wise to replace a water supply pipe before having works carried out on your driveway, particularly if it is in an aging material such as black alkathene, lead or galvanized metal.
