EKD deliver quality designs and accurate analysis of bespoke, high performance electric motors, generators, actuators and position sensors. We provide specialist engineering design services for motors, generators, position sensors and actuators. Uniquely, our activities encompass all aspects of electrical machine design, not just the electromagnetics.

Our work includes mechanical and thermal design, materials selection, reliability analyses and design for manufacture. Our designs are often application-specific, seeing service in the harsh environments associated with spacecraft, civil and military aircraft, military vehicles and subsea and downhole mechanisms. Other designs are destined for medical hand-pieces, niche industrial products and automotive systems.

Whatever the requirement, be it high speed, high power, high efficiency, high reliability or simply the need for a deep understanding of how a machine will behave under any particular set of conditions, EKD offers the highest standard of engineering design.
Services
EKD's customers come from many different industry sectors and have widely differing requirements and budgets.
To accommodate all needs, we offer adaptable and flexible ways of working.
Often in support of a client's proposal to their customer, this is likely to include selection of product type, preliminary sizing and performance prediction.
We can prepare complete technical proposals if required, including responses to higher-level technical requirements.
For clients with their own draughting capacity, we can provide the basic electromagnetic design: lamination profiles, magnet definition, winding details.
Traditionally, motors and generators have been classified according to their size or power output, and terms such as 'fractional horsepower' or 'low integral horsepower' are frequently used.
However, the increasing use of advanced materials in modern, efficient designs means that the long-established performance norms are being challenged.
Motors of small physical size can have astonishingly high short-duty performance.
Motors which are large in diameter can still be small in volume if they have a large hole through the middle or are short in length.
In the same way as an architect designs buildings for others to construct, EKD designs products for others to manufacture.
It follows that our products are our designs.
Some of the product types we design are shown below.
We are constantly adding to this list and we are always happy to discuss new product types.
In addition, we are able to propose solutions comprising combinations of the above, or by adding complimentary components such as gearboxes, ball screws and roller screws.
For example, a rotary actuator might consist of a motor, rotary position sensor and gearbox, whilst a linear actuator could include a motor, linear position sensor and ball screw.
