I & H Brown
From small beginnings more than half a century ago, I & H Brown has grown into a diverse and successful family business with wide-ranging interests. We operate 5 distinct divisions consisting of Civil Engineering, Plant Hire, Development, Energy and Farming & Estates. However, civil engineering remains our core business typically contributing over 90% of annual turnover.

We deliver complex projects across a wide variety of sectors including infrastructure, roads, energy, waste and marine. It is our highly skilled workforce and client-focused approach that has seen us continue to expand our operations across the UK.
Services
The company was founded in 1964 by Ian and Hardie Brown, who at that time farmed in Fife.
We began life as a plant hirer then evolved into sub-contracting and, from the mid-1970s, into a civil engineering main contractor.
We have successfully completed over 500 projects and we are proud that our Managing Director, Scott Brown, was the first Chairman of CECA Scotland.
We initially made a reputation as an expert earthworks contractor and although we retain that earthworks expertise, we have continued to develop our capabilities significantly and now operate across a range of sectors and industries.
We are a medium-sized family business that employs around 200 people and has a turnover of around 60 million.
We have successfully completed civil engineering projects across the length and breadth of Great Britain.
Our policy has always been to take a long-term strategic view and to encourage growth through the re-investment of our profits.
We believe that our greatest strengths are our flexibility, our diversity and above all our client focus.
Although our core business remains civil engineering, we have interests across development, farming and energy.
Scott Brown - Scott joined the company in 1983 after qualifying as a CA with Ernst & Young.
As Managing Director, he has overall responsibility for the day to day running of the business.
He is a past Chairman of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (Scotland), a past Vice-Chairman of Coalpro, a past Trustee of The Scottish Civic Trust and past Chairman of the Victims Fund, a charity that helps victims in the immediate aftermath of crime.
His other interests include sailing and he is an enthusiastic piper.
I & H Brown is a business with its origins in farming and we continue to be one of Scotland's largest private landowners.
As a result of this history, the Directors of the company have always recognised the importance of growing the business with a long-term perspective - even before the word 'sustainability' became so prevalent.
We are committed to reducing our environmental impact.
We began measuring and reporting our carbon emissions in 2009 and, due to the diverse nature of our businesses, we report a footprint, which is very low for a construction business.
As a civil engineering contractor, we have never stopped evolving, entering new markets and taking on bigger and more complex projects.
Today we boast a more diverse and intricate range of capabilities than ever before.
Our place in the wider company brings us a degree of stability that is not afforded to organisations that rely solely on construction.
A large proportion of our work requires design management and 3-D digital modelling.
It is this innovative design capability, which sets us apart from our competitors.
